1. City of Rocks State Park
This state park is just a 30-minute drive from Deming in Faywood. It packs a lot of natural wonder into 1 square mile, including rock formations up to 40 ft high that resemble buildings lining city streets. The landscape of City of Rocks State Park was formed by a volcanic eruption millions of years ago.
When you visit, you can hike or bike more than 5 miles of trails, camp, have a picnic, check out the visitor’s center, or look for local birds like meadowlarks, finches, sparrows, and wrens. City of Rocks State Park is located at 327 NM Hwy 61. It’s open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
2. Sam Baca Aquatic Center
On summer’s hottest days, you can cool off at this local Deming pool, which has an activity pool with a water slide, a competition pool, and a therapy pool. Sam Baca Aquatic Center also offers group swimming lessons, adult exercise therapy, and private facility rental for parties.
The Sam Baca Aquatic Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission costs $5 for adults and $4 for ages 3 to 17. Younger kids get in for free. Children younger than 10 must always have adult supervision at the pool.
3. Pancho Villa State Park
Another state park is located about a 40-minute drive south of Deming in Columbus. Located on the border of Mexico, Pancho Villa State Park features a garden of native plants, camping facilities, picnic shelters, and hiking trails. You can also visit historic buildings and exhibits documenting the Mexican general Pancho Villa’s raid of the US in 1916. Pancho Villa State Park is located at 400 NM Rte 9.
